In this BLOG post I will teach you how to set up this fun & festive activity, as well as share the benefits of STEM experiences for kids.
Candy hearts are a classic holiday candy and while they may not be everyone's favorite to eat, they offer a TON of fun ways to explore learning and STEM strategies and techniques.
It allows kids an opportunity to ask questions, make predictions, problem solve and test their theories in a kid-friendly, developmentally appropriate way.
Take this classic baking soda and vinegar experiment.
We asked these questions:
I wonder what will happen if we add candy hearts into the fizzy activity?
Will they get smaller?
Will they turn the bin different colors?
Will they fizz or will the vinegar just splash off?
First, we asked the questions, then we came up with a plan to test them!
We sprinkled baking soda into the bottom of the sensory tray and added the candy hearts in. Then, we poured white vinegar into a bowl and added in a pipette.
Once we asked the questions, we made predictions on what we thought would happen!
Then, we got to squeezing and squirting and testing our theories.
On top of the amazing STEM learning happening, the pipette adds a great way to strengthen fine motor skills!
Is this simple? YES.
Is there a TON of learning happening. BIG YES!!!!
It's Science. It's learning. It's exploring. It's problem solving and making predictions.
It's providing developmentally appropriate techniques to practice important concepts.
It's fun.
It's hands-on.
Its providing kids with the tools to LEARN.
Want to add an extra layer of sensory fun? Add a few drops of food coloring into the vinegar before you squirt it in. Watch as the colors mix and blend together.
